Necklace Chain Length Guide: Choosing the Right Length for Your Pendant

Buying jewellery online can sometimes make it tricky to visualise exactly how a piece will look when you wear it. One of the questions I’m asked most often is “Where will the necklace sit?”
The answer depends largely on the length of the chain, so I’ve put together this simple guide to help you picture how different necklace lengths will look when worn.
Visualising the different chain lengths
The model above is wearing three of my most popular chain lengths: 40cm, 45cm and 50cm
As you can see, even a few centimetres can make a difference to where your necklace sits.
A 40cm chain sits higher around the base of the neck and works beautifully for a more delicate, close-fitting look.
A 45cm chain sits slightly lower, around the top of the chest. This is the length I tend to favour and is the standard length I use for the majority of my pendants.
A 50cm chain sits lower again, giving the pendant a little more space and creating a longer, more relaxed look.
Of course, how a necklace sits will vary slightly from person to person depending on your proportions, the size of the pendant and what you’re wearing it with. Your personal style is just as important, so there’s no single “right” necklace length.
Buying a necklace as a gift?
If you’re buying a pendant for someone else and aren’t sure which chain length they usually wear, 45cm is a great all-round choice. It’s the standard length I use for most of my pendants and works well for everyday wear.
If you happen to know they prefer their necklaces shorter or longer, just let me know when ordering. I can easily change the chain length for you.
There may be a small additional charge for longer chains, but I’ll always let you know if there’s a difference in price.
