Have you ever wondered how gemstones are securely held in jewellery? One of the most elegant and versatile stone setting techniques is bezel setting, and in this workshop, you'll learn how to create your very own bezel set piece from scratch.
This class is perfect for those who already have some basic jewellery making experience and are ready to take the next step in developing their skills, but we do take it slow so if you are complete novice, you'd be more than welcome.
What is Bezel Setting?
A bezel setting uses a strip of metal that wraps around the edge of a gemstone, holding it securely in place. It's one of the oldest stone-setting techniques and remains a favourite among jewellers today. Not only does it protect the stone, but it also creates a clean, contemporary finish that works beautifully with a wide variety of gemstones.
Throughout the workshop, I'll guide you through each stage of the process, breaking it down into manageable steps so you can build confidence as you work.
What You'll Make
During the workshop, you'll create a sterling silver pendant featuring a beautiful cabochon gemstone of your choice. This is usually a round stone with a smooth, curved top.

You'll learn how to:
Measure and create a bezel setting for your stone
Solder and shape silver components
Attach the bezel to a backplate
Cut and refine your design
Polish and finish your piece
Set your stone securely into the finished setting
By the end of the day, you'll leave with a unique handmade pendant or ring and a whole new set of jewellery making skills.
Why Learn Stone Setting?
Stone setting opens up a huge range of creative possibilities. Once you've mastered the basics of bezel setting, you'll be able to incorporate gemstones into your own jewellery designs and begin exploring more advanced techniques.
Many students tell me that learning to set stones feels like unlocking a whole new area of jewellery making. It's incredibly satisfying seeing a gemstone securely set into a piece you've made entirely by hand. This is what got me well and truely hooked on jewellery making (and buying stones, although that's another hobby in itself!)
Small Class Sizes, Plenty of Support
Workshops take place in my dedicated jewellery classroom above my shop in Pocklington. With a maximum of six participants, there's plenty of opportunity for one-to-one guidance throughout the day.
Whether you're feeling confident or slightly nervous about trying something new, you'll be supported every step of the way.
All tools, materials, and the all important gemstone are included, so you can simply arrive ready to learn and enjoy the experience.
Is This Class Right For You?
This workshop is ideal for anyone who has completed a beginner jewellery making class or has some basic experience with sawing, filing, and soldering silver.
If you've been wanting to expand your skills and learn one of the most useful techniques in jewellery making, bezel setting is a fantastic next step.
